During July 5th to August 9th, 2008, the University of Alaska Anchorage will sponsor a Paleoindian archaeology field school in the Alaska/Yukon borderlands region. Students will learn all techniques of archaeological survey and excavation, as well as undertake ethnographic experiences with local Athabascan Native people. Excavation will focus on the 12,000-year-old Little John Paleoindian site adjacent to the Alaska Highway near the Alaska/Yukon border. The Little John site contains well-preserved megafaunal (bison, elk) remains as well as early lithic assemblages (Chindadn or Nenana Complex). Project participants will learn all excavation techniques appropriate to deeply stratified Paleoindian sites, including use of the laser transit (total station). Students will also learn stratigraphic profiling, artifact drawing, field photography and cataloging, and will have lectures on geoarchaeology, zooarchaeology, and lithic analysis, as well as ethnob
